Study Examines Prevalence of Child Abuse Injuries

- In a story covered extensively by national media, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics examined child abuse injuries among American children during the first year of life. In the most reported finding, the  study calculated a rate of 58.2 child-abuse-related hospital admissions per 100,000 children, compared to a rate of 50.0 admissions related to SIDS. New Research Links Child Abuse and Crime

- In a new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research, Does Child Abuse Cause Crime?, authors Janet Currie and Erdal Tekin focus on the effect of child maltreatment on crime using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), and note the significant negative economic impacts of crime. NYT Asks Tough Questions About Psychotropics and Foster Care

- On Monday, The New York Times published an article reflecting on recent research regarding the prescription of multiple psychotropic medications to youth in foster care. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics and finds that about 2% of foster children are prescribed powerful psychotropics generally used to treat serious adult mental illnesses, and that many youth are prescribed more than one powerful med at a time. Excellent New Report on Employment Struggles Among Youth Aging Out

- New York City's Center for An Urban Future recently released an excellent report "Fostering Careers" examining the employment situation of youth aging out of New York's foster care system.
