Mission

Foster nurturing family environments within communities for children in need. AFS is committed to:

* Supporting families at risk
* Creating permanency options for all foster children
* Providing mental health and other supports to children, youth and their families
* Preparing foster youth for adult independent living
* Responding to needs in the community as they arise

Services

Foster Care Programs: Short-term emergency shelter foster care, Long Term Therapeutic Foster Care, Intensive Treatment Foster Care, and Therapeutic Foster Care for Children with Developmental Disabilities

Adoption Programs: For families initially seeking children to adopt; Adoption 'conversion' program to assist foster families to adopt their foster children

Marin TAY Programs: Independent Living Skills training for emancipating foster youth and Transitional Housing for former foster youth.

Mental Health Services: Individual and Family Therapy for foster children, youth and their families; Therapeutic Visitation Services in San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa Counties.

All services are offered both in English and Spanish.

About Alternative Family Services

Alternative Family Services, Inc. (AFS) provides therapeutic foster care, intensive treatment foster care, short-term emergency foster care and adoption services for abused, neglected and developmentally disabled children in the Bay Area. It provides a range of Medi-Cal funded mental health services to foster children, youth and their families in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties. It also provides Independent Living Skills training to emancipating foster youth and transitional housing to former foster youth in Marin County. It has pioneered in the development of Therapeutic Visitation Services for families with children in the foster care system. AFS, a not-for-profit corporation, is licensed by the State of California as a Foster Family Agency and as an Adoption Agency, and vendorized by the Regional Center system.
