Contra Costa Times (Harrington, 5/9/12) reports on the 'gap' faced by foster youth who turn 19 this year and are dropped from extended foster care until January 1, 2013, when they can petition to re-enter foster care. The article points out that while some counties, including Alameda County, are covering costs to bridge the gap, others, like neighboring Contra Costa County, are not. One foster youth in Contra Costa County who turned 19 on Monday petitioned the court to extend his support. Read more
