February 07, 2012 - In a story covered extensively by national media,
a new study published in the journal Pediatrics examined child abuse injuries among American children during the first year of life. In the most reported finding, the study calculated a rate of 58.2 child-abuse-related hospital admissions per 100,000 children, compared to a rate of 50.0 admissions related to SIDS. Researchers found that nationwide 4,569 children under 18 in the hospital in 2006 of whom 300 died.
Time Magazine covered the report in its health blog, noting that parents and caregivers were most likely to injure a child, and that poor children (here, those on Medicaid) were 6 times as likely to be injured.
