Chafee Grants Impacted by Sequestration

- The federal sequestration has impacted Chafee education grants for foster youth, as noted in this Special Alert from the California Student Aid Commission. Funds for the 2012-13 award year have been reduced by $233,000. For the 2013-14 award year, the reduction will be $412,000. The Sequester’s Effect on Homelessness

- A new paper by Douglas Rice, senior policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, describes the effects of the sequester on homelessness. "Overall," Rice points out, "sequestration will cut more than $2 billion in 2013 from housing assistance and community-development programs administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)." Department of Labor Grants for Programs Serving Formerly Incarcerated Youth & Women

- The US Department of Labor will provide approximately $32 million through two grant competitions that will offer job training, education and support services to formerly incarcerated youths and women. This includes a total of $20 million to operate programs that work with juvenile offenders and youths at-risk of becoming juvenile offenders in high-poverty, high-crime communities. President Obama Signs Uninterrupted Scholars Act

- On Monday, January 14th, President Obama signed the Uninterrupted Scholars Act, which amends the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act to allow child welfare agencies access to the education records of children in their care while preserving their educational privacy rights.  The bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Foster Care spearheaded this important piece of legislation, which will have a lasting and positive impact on the education of foster children and youth across the country.Read more »

Paid Media Internship

- Fostering Media Connections is currently accepting applications for their Guardians of Social Change paid media internship program.  For 10 hours a week, current and former foster youth are paid to learn and report on the foster care system and produce videos.
