Education

As foster youth move from placement to placement, they often change schools, falling behind and losing credits. Nearly half haven’t graduated from High School upon leaving the system. Alameda County is leading the way in the development of programs and advocacy to support the educational attainment of all foster and probation youth.

Alameda County Office of Ed Seeks Educational Mentors

- Under the direction of the coordinator of the Foster Youth Services (FYS) program of the Alameda County Office of Education, the Educational Mentor assists youth residing in foster care placements through mentoring; counseling; providing, or arranging for the referral to, tutoring, transitioning, emancipation, special education, and other academic support services; and establishing collaborative relationships with local advisory groups and agencies. Media Coverage of Foster Care

- The Contra Costa Times (Marcus, 2/21/11) reported on a pilot Foster Youth Education Program in Los Angeles that has dramatically increased graduation rates. Foster youth in the pilot program "graduated 75 percent of the time and 80 percent of those graduates went on to four-year colleges." Leadership and Advocacy Academy for Transition Age Youth

No Cash Left Behind: Financial Aid Checklist

Asm. Beall Introduces Legislation to Give Foster Youth Priority Enrollment

- If a bill introduced by Assemblymember Jim Beall (D-San Jose) passes, it would give the estimated 2,000 current and former foster youth attending community colleges priority enrollment in classes each semester. In this climate of drastic budget cuts, community colleges are expected to cut back on the number of classes offered.
