As foster youth move from placement to placement, they often change schools, falling behind and losing credits. Nearly half haven’t graduated from High School upon leaving the system. Alameda County is leading the way in the development of programs and advocacy to support the educational attainment of all foster and probation youth.

“Let’s Talk About Sex, With Foster Youth” Now Available Online

- The first episode of “Let’s Talk About Sex, with Foster Youth” from Fostering Media Connections is now available to view online HERE. The series of “webisodes” is aimed at improving the sexual education of foster youth. Each webisode consists of interviews with foster youth, the adults in their lives and experts on a range of topics covering sexual health, family planning and the psychological issues associated with sexuality.Read more »

Chafee Grants Impacted by Sequestration

- The federal sequestration has impacted Chafee education grants for foster youth, as noted in this Special Alert from the California Student Aid Commission. Funds for the 2012-13 award year have been reduced by $233,000. For the 2013-14 award year, the reduction will be $412,000. Department of Labor Grants for Programs Serving Formerly Incarcerated Youth & Women

- The US Department of Labor will provide approximately $32 million through two grant competitions that will offer job training, education and support services to formerly incarcerated youths and women. This includes a total of $20 million to operate programs that work with juvenile offenders and youths at-risk of becoming juvenile offenders in high-poverty, high-crime communities. Hearing to Preserve Foster Youth Services TOMORROW
