While the THP-Plus transitional housing program has provided critical support to many youth, there is still much work to be done to ensure that no foster or probation youth leaves the system only to find themselves homeless. City of Berkeley RFP for TAY Services

- The City of Berkeley has released an RFP for MHSA funded Transition Age Youth services. Due June 6, 2013, the city seeks proposals to "provide services and supports to TAY with serious mental health issues, who are homeless or marginally housed. The project will be focused on providing youth with the necessary resources and supports that will enable them to manage the symptoms of their illness, and to take greater control of their lives....Read more »

Report Released: Youth Homelessness in the Era of AB 12

- When AB 12, California’s Fostering Connections to Success Act, became law in January 2012, it opened a door to the possibility of safety and stability for older homeless youth and youth at risk of homelessness by providing for the expansion of federally funded, mandated supports and services to foster youth ages 18-21. We launched the Alameda County AB 12 Homeless Youth Demonstration Project to coincide with the implementation of this extraordinary new law.

Grand Opening of Rising Oaks: May 16th

- On May 16th, from 3:30 to 5:00, FYA member Fred Finch Youth Center will host the Grand Opening of Rising Oaks, their newest facility which will provide 30 affordable housing units to youth aging out of foster care. The Sequester’s Effect on Homelessness

- A new paper by Douglas Rice, senior policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, describes the effects of the sequester on homelessness. "Overall," Rice points out, "sequestration will cut more than $2 billion in 2013 from housing assistance and community-development programs administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)." RAFA Expansion

- FYA member Bay Area Youth Center’s Real Alternatives for Adolescence (RAFA) program began in 2003 with 5 youth ages 16-19 living in scattered site apartments. In October 2012, RAFA became the first THP-Plus Foster Care provider certified in California, licensed to now serve Non-Minor Dependents who are eligible to continue receiving services under the AB 12 extension of foster care. Alameda County Housing and Community Development NOFA

- Alameda County Housing and Community Development Department has announced the availability of funding under the federal HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) Program for the development of affordable housing for projects in the HOME Consortium as well as the availability of funding from the federal HOPWA Program (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS) for the development of affordable housing for projects throughout Alameda County.
